SproutSpoken is FIVE!
We're celebrating five wonderful years since SproutSpoken started in 2017...
There have been hundreds of open-micers, a steady stream of world-class headline performers, scores of nervous first-timers, a wonderful range of workshops.... along with plenty of laughs, tears, songs and sillness. We've popped up in a nightclub, cafe, orchard, on the beach, in a church, at an orchard, over at the Huer's Hut as well as Newquay Habour. Not to mention Looe, Bodmin and Watergate Bay!
And now it's time to celebrate. We're delighted to welcome Ella Frears, Demi Anter, Dai Woolridge and Jonny Fluffypunk along for the ride, as well as local support and more. Sprout Health Foods (our beloved spiritual home) will be providing a pop-up bar/kitchen and Clemo Books will be in the mix to boot. Get your ass there too!
Doors open: 7pm
Show starts: 8pm
Licensed bar available.
Age guide: 14+
DAI WOOLRIDGE is an award-winning storyteller poet from South Wales, blending rhythm and rhyme with passion, playfulness and colloquial prose. He has performed for Sky Sports, the Welsh Rugby Union and BBC Radio 2. Dai is host of the Spoken Word Stage for Big Church Festival and was shortlisted for the Outspoken performance poetry category 2022. Watch Dai here - http://spoken-truth.com'
ELLA FREARS is a poet and artist originally from Cornwall, now based in London. Her collection Shine, Darling (Offord Road Book) was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection, and the T. S. Eliot Prize for Poetry. She has been poet in residence for Tate Britain, the National Trust, Royal Holloway University physics department, and the John Hansard Gallery where she wrote I AM THE MOTHER CAT (Rough Trade Books). Ella’s poems about the St Ives Modernists are currently on show at Tate St Ives. She was recently named the first ever Poet in Residence for the Dartington Trust gardens.
JOHNNY FLUFFYPUNK began his ‘career’ spitting vicious political verse between bands at punk gigs until cured by a West Country shaman. Now he ‘does’ poetry that deafly fuses bittersweet autobiography, political disillusionment and surreal whimsy in an act which has established him as a firm favourite at festivals, arts centres and housing benefit offices up and down the country. Equally at home on cabaret, poetry and alternative comedy stages and stridently anti-competition in both the Arts and life in general, Jonny is- to his own disgust- winner of countless poetry slams and has come second three times in the UK National All-Stars slam. He has two volumes of poetry, prose and threadbare philosophy- ‘The Sustainable Nihilists’ Handbook’ and ‘Poundland Rimbaud’- out on the Burning Eye imprint, and his solo no-fi stand-up spoken word show ‘Man Up, Jonny Fluffypunk- One Man’s Struggle with Late-Onset Responsibility’ spent 2015 touring around the garden sheds, allotments and summer houses of Britain in a blatant championing of homespun DIY culture. A new show, tentatively entitled ‘How I Came To Be Where I Never Was’, is in development, and work-in-progress shows have been very favourably received.
DEMI ANTER is a poet and actor originally from California, now based between London and Berlin. She has toured extensively as a spoken word artist, including appearances at Glastonbury Festival, the Scottish Storytelling Centre, Poetry Ireland, and Bristol Old Vic. Her written work has been published by Magma, Banshee, and Ninth Letter, among others. She recently published her debut poetry collection Small Machine (Write Bloody UK). The collection was described as “tender, visceral, beautifully vulnerable,” by Musa Okwonga, and "strikingly luminous and soothing,” by Chanel Miller. Find out more at www.demianter.com.
