CATCH AND LAND
SproutSpoken founder, Dicky, has built an extensive and unique practise working with poets who want to bring their words alive on stage. Along the way, he has discovered that there is a need for this and loves to help unlock potential in this arena.
Haing noticed that in the theatre/drama world, for instance, it is a given that an actor needs a director to fully release their potential. Similarly, in the corporate world, those wishing to nail their business pitches or public speaking might readily look to the services of a delivery coach. It seems, however, in the spoken word and performance poetry mode, support for the translation from page to stage is not readily considered and - if so - available. Perhaps it is something to do with artists being both writer and sharer of the words. In any case, Dicky is a big believer that if words have been written to be shared, at least as much time, focus and craft should be given to delivery as in the original writing phase.
Dicky takes the view that all poems are fundamentally micro-stories or micro dramas that need to be told, unpacked and shared with the audience rather than recited to or read at them. A ‘catch and land’ approach is taken in 1-on-1 sessions, with a participants learning to ‘catch' the inherent story within a poem, followed by a consideration and practise of how to ‘land' it effectively for an audience. The goal is an effective momentary shared experience for all. This often involves writers taking a step back, returning to the original inspiration for the poem, which can sometimes involves soul-searching or recalling with curiosity.
