RICK DOVE is a queer, mixed-race, and neuro-divergent poet and storyteller from London. As a progressive activist and agitator, Rick’s work explores themes of identity, philosophy, and social justice using a blend of traditional and free verse styles in order to interrogate the liminal spaces that define our common humanity. Rick has had words published by The Guardian, Untitled Writers, Nymphs & Thugs, Apples & Snakes, Arachne Press, Nine Pens Press, The Morning Star, and his debut collection, Tales From the Other Box, was published in August 2020 by Burning Eye Books.

Dubbed "one to watch" by 2019 TS Eliot Prize winner Roger Robinson, notable performances include runs at Wandsworth Arts and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, Black History Month with the Cabinet Office, and regular sets with Sofar Sounds. Rick was crowned the = at the Royal Albert Hall on 4th July 2021.

SPIKE ZEPHANIAH is an eccentric performer and multi-faceted artist. Combining spoken word rap with live illustration (and occasionally drifting into puppetry), he draws influence from hip-hop, horror movies and Tony Hart in equal measure. Ever exploring new ways to bring drawing to the stage along with densely-packed rhymes on offbeat topics, this is definitely something a little different.

SHADAY BARROWES-BAYEWUNMI is a Plymouth-based performance poet. This year she has focused on drawing from her experiences of having alopecia universalis, using it as inspiration to create work that’s daring, political, and spreads awareness for the community. Her work also explores themes such as identity, sexiness, vulnerability, race, and mental health. Most recently, she has written and performed an autobiographical scratch, as part of her final project as a creative artist in residence role at Beyond Face 2021. She was chosen to be a part of the BBC Words First scheme in 2021 and crowned Spork Poetry Slam winner 2022. She later received funding from Alopecia UK to continue working on the piece to increase visibility for bald black women in creative spaces. She has worked with a variety of organizations across the UK, including Beyond Face, Talawa MAKE, BBC, Nine Arches, The Barbican Theatre Plymouth, Strike a light, Poet in the City, MIND Charity, and Alopecia UK.

This SproutSpoken event is kindly supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
